What can you say about Jean-Luc Picard that is not evident in one viewing of any episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation?

Captain Picard handled nearly every situation with a masterful, cool-headed approach. The lives of the men and women who served under him were of the utmost importance. He was a master at diplomacy, rarely if ever having to resort to using his fists to solve a confrontation.

Picard was able to draw on his own personal experiences, such as his assimilation by the Borg, to make him a better captain, rather then to be used as a crutch. His leadership skills and the loyalty he inspired were beyond question, and his judgement was rarely clouded by emotion.

Throughout the series, you would even see Picard become a warmer, more compassionate character, establishing close bonds and relationships with several of his officers.

Were I to spend several years of my life on a starship in the middle of outer space, I can not think of a captain that I would have more trust in, who would always have my safety and best interest at heart, and who I know would not rest until he saw me safely home to my family.

At the same time, he would make sure that the ethics and values that make up Starfleet are upheld. This captain would be a beacon for everything that Starfleet and Star Trek itself stands for, and for me, that Captain is Jean-Luc Picard.

As always readers, I eagerly await your opinions. Please tell me which captain you’re not sure you would be completely comfortable with, and which captain is your favorite of all-time.
