Star Trek: Strange New Worlds just finished production on its first season

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds finished production on its first season not that long ago, with series star Anson Mount making the announcement via Paramount Plus’ Youtube channel. But now there is the potential for a season two before season one gets out of the gate next year. While there has been no official confirmation from Paramount Plus, Trekmovie reported that Production Weekly, which provides professionals working in the film and television industry updates on projects in production, shared information on the potential second season in its most recent update.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who has been watching the most recent Star Trek offerings as most of them have been given second season pick-ups rather quickly. Star Trek: Discovery was only six episodes into its first season of thirteen episodes when a second season renewal was announced by Startrek.com. And, in a January 24, 2021 video to a fan, Kate Mulgrew (Captain Kathryn Janeway) confirmed that she was going into the second season production soon on Star Trek: Prodigy, which didn’t begin its first season until October 28, 2021.

Is it possible that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds could see seven seasons?

Paramount Plus recently extended Alex Kurtzman’s contract for five years because it wants more Star Trek content. And Syfy.com reported that Kurtzman said Discovery has “years and years left,” adding that Trek shows have a “long history of going for seven seasons minimum.” Discovery is now entering its fourth season. So with it showing no signs of slowing down, and viewers still tuning in to it, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Prodigy, and soon Strange New Worlds, it wouldn’t make sense to cut one of the series short.

On top of that, Strange New Worlds is one of the most highly-anticipated new live-action shows on Paramount Plus’ roster as it’s bringing the Enterprise, Captain Pike, Spock, Number One, Uhura, and Nurse Chapel, to name a few, back to television, even though they are quite different from their originals. So it stands to reason that Strange New Worlds is going to be around for quite a while, beginning with its first season premiere in 2022.
