Star Trek star LeVar Burton accepts pro wrestlers challenge

LeVar Burton is known for many things in this world. From Star Trek to Reading Rainbow, to possibly hosting Jeopardy! Now, he may be known for something else; wrestling. This whole situation came about when a pro wrestler by the name of R.J. City was asked about a PBS-designed pro wrestling championship.

City may not be a wrestler many people know, but while he’s still building his brand, he already has had public run-ins with David Arquette. Arquette headlined in a 2000 film called Ready to Rumble, a film about two fans of the now-defunct World Championship Wrestling company. During the height of the film, Arquette wrestled and won the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. It was not a well-received decision, prompting Arquette to do a “comeback” of sorts a few years ago, and filmed it for a documentary.

One of the big focal points of Arquette’s return to wrestling came with City. So City does have ties and history with doing celebrity encounters.

Levar Burton accepts the challenge

Burton accepting the challenge wasn’t just some fly-by-night response. City and others started to get very excited for the proposed PBS Championship Pledge Drive Challenge.

One of the biggest names includes PBS themselves, who seemingly liked the idea and a tweet about the potential throwdown.

City has taken a few tongue-in-cheek jabs at Burton since the Star Trek alum accepted the challenge from City but it remains to be seen if and what will exactly transpire. While pro wrestling is staged with a winner and a loser, it’s not exactly “fake”.  The damage these individuals incur is very real, and taking a bump on a wrestling ring isn’t like falling on a trampoline. It’s a wood board, with a little mat separating that and a person’s back.

Asking a 64-year-old who has no formal training in pro wrestling to take bumps and spots would be insane. They could also do what Jay Leno did back in the 90s and just do little stunts that won’t hurt much.

They could also just do something that isn’t physical at all.

Either way, it could be very exciting to see Burton shake it up in the world of spandex and suplexes.
