Star Trek fans will have to wait awhile for the next movie

Originally, Paramount had the next Star Trek movie on the schedule for June 9, 2023 which was already too far away for fans as there hasn’t been a movie since 2016. Now, things are being pushed even more, and Star Trek IV has been rescheduled to December 2023.

The J.J. Abrams produced film doesn’t have any of the former actors from the three Kelvin-timeline movies attached to it as of yet, according to Hollywood Reporter, but there’s no indication this is the reason or even one of the reasons why the move is being shuffled around. Paramount has a new CEO, Brian Robbins, and this comes as he’s taking control.

Brian Robbins wanted Prodigy, the new Star Trek series to launch in theaters

Back in October, Robbins told Hollywood Reporter that he wished Star Trek: Prodigy had launched in theaters as he said the premiere played like a movie. This could indicate which way the upcoming movie might go. Star Trek IV might be animated as opposed to live-action, or we could end up with both as Robbins pointed out who was helming what in his interview.

"“We’re working on several fronts and obviously Alex is the key for the franchise [on Paramount+]. J.J. has been the keeper of the franchise on the film side. We hope that as a company that we do what’s right for the franchise altogether.”"

He went on to say that theatrical movies ignited franchises and that things need to move into development soon.

"“There’s no doubt that big theatrical movies are the beacon that ignite franchises. We’re in it and I don’t really have anything to say because I’m waiting for the development to be delivered. I can’t wait to get going on it; we’re not there yet, but we need to get there soon.”"

Paramount has also moved Transformers: Rise of the Beasts back a year, and it will take the Star Trek movie’s original slot on June 9, 2023. It originally scheduled for June 24, 2022.
