The release date for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been up in the air
Since series star Anson Mount announced that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds wrapped production, the release date has been up in the air. So far, all we’ve known is that the show is scheduled to debut on Paramount Plus sometime in 2022. Finally, though, David Nevins, Paramount Plus’ Content Chief provided more information when he spoke to Deadline about what’s coming to the network.
Fans have been anticipating the new series wouldn’t be arriving until late next year with Star Trek: Prodigy having debuted in October, Star Trek: Discovery’s season four coming on November 18th of this year, and Star Trek: Picard coming in February 2022. Fortunately, Nevins put that supposition to rest when he said that ” Strange New Worlds will be on the air next spring.”
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has the values of Star Trek: The Original Series
There has been much talk about Strange New Worlds with original characters which were introduced in the 1960s returning to the screen so their stories can be told. It’s been confirmed that the series will be episodic, much like TOS. and executive producer Akiva Goldman told Variety in May 2020 that “we’re going to try to harken back to some classical Trek values, to be optimistic, and to be more episodic. Obviously, we will take advantage of the serialized nature of character and story building. But I think our plots will be more closed-ended than you’ve seen in either Discovery or Picard.”
Nevins confirmed this when he spoke with Deadline.
"Strange New Worlds is a return to Star Trek as adventure film, just sort of space exploration; it has a lot of the values in the original Star Trek, and I think that’s going to be really fun."
So viewers shouldn’t expect anything like Picard or Discovery when Strange New Worlds debuts in the spring of next year. Clearly, it will be its own show and we’ll get glimpses of the past and what started the Star Trek franchise.
