Star Trek: Discovery’s new outfits look like Power Ranger costumes

Star Trek has always had a unique sense of style. From the original designs of a shirt and black pants for the men and a short skirt for the women; to the black, full-body pajamas that The Next Generation introduced, all the way to Discovery and its new take on the Starfleet attire by going all blue and gold; Star Trek has always had their own look.

Not all of them work. In hindsight, the Next Generation era of attire looked like something you’d buy at a Halloween pop-up store, but it did lead into the grey-based attire we got in First Contact and Deep Space Nine, so that didn’t suck.

And while I may not be a fan of the all-black, with colored shoulders look, I am a fan of the black shoulders look with the color in the middle. Just moving the colors down turned it from pajamas to dignified space-navy attire.

Yet, the newest versions of the Star Trek uniforms look more inspired by the Power Rangers than Starfleet.

And I’m ok with that.

Star Trek: Discovery season four attire feels like Trek meets the Power Rangers

This isn’t meant as a dig, either. I like the new Discovery uniforms. It took me a bit, but I do like how they look. They’re colorful, sleek, and modern. The blue and gold uniforms of early Discovery were ugly and just bland. These season four uniforms really work.

That doesn’t mean I’m not expecting Sonequa Martin-Green to burst out an “IT’S MORPHIN’ TIME!” every so often.

Now like most reading, I watched Power Rangers growing up but grew out of it. So when I saw an image of the Power Rangers  S.P.D outfit on Twitter the other day, I thought to myself, “Did Star Trek borrow inspiration from the Power Rangers?”

They’re not a carbon copy, obviously and but there are minor similarities there. Minor enough to warrant asking the question if there’s a little Ranger influence in our Trek costumes.

Regardless of whether there is or not, the new Discovery uniform works. Even if you’re not a fan of the show, you can at least look at the Trek uniforms and be impressed with how far they’ve come.

Now if only we can get that Star Trek/Power Rangers crossover…
