Slashfilms names their Top 10 Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes
The debate around the “top X” involving Star Trek is always going to lead to a lot of discourse. Top characters, top moments, top shows, top episodes in top shows. All of that will elicit a lot of discourse among the fanbase. So doing a top Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes list is certainly going to perk a lot of ears.
Slashfilms released their top 10, though it doesn’t appear to be in any actual rankings, just a list of their Top 10. It’s certainly a list. I may be in the minority and while I don’t find The Next Generation “bad”, It’s not my favorite series. So I may not be the best arbiter of judging their list.
That said, I’m still gonna.
Slashfilm’s Top 10 Star Trek: Next Generation episodes
- Half a Life
- Conspiracy
- Q-Who
- Relics
- All Good Things
- Darmok
- Inner Light
- Chain of Command
- The Best of Both Worlds
- Yesterday’s Enterprise
“Yesterday’s Enterprise”, “The Best of Both Worlds” and “Q-Who” are among my favorite Trek episodes period. So I support their inclusion wholly. I’m not too over the moon about “Darmok”, but I find it silly; plus they basically just used Predator from the movie “Predator” as the alien villain, so that’s dope.
“Conspiracy” is fine but more memorable than say good. At the moment I have no opinion on “Relics” or “Chain of Command” due to how long it’s been since I last saw either. “All Good Things” is a fine enough way to end a series as any, I suppose. Yet, my two issues are “Inner Light” and “Half a LIfe”.
Lwaxana Troi? Unless she’s relentlessly flirting with Odo, I say pass. Just because she’s played by Majel Barrett doesn’t mean we have to like her performances. As for “The Inner Light” it is easily one of my least liked episodes of any Star Trek, The Next Generation included.
All in all, I’d give this list a strong B. I’d recommend every episode to some degree, even if that recommendation is about how the show looks when it misses, because as great as some of these episodes are, some of them do miss.
Now, you’re free to like any and every Star Trek episode you want. Just like I’m allowed not to.
