Biggest Star Trek moments of 2021

The year is wrapping up, and so much happened during the Star Trek world in 2021. One of my personal favorites was the debut of Star Trek: Prodigy, and honestly, there were a lot of other secondary favorites on my list. Whatculture, though, had a list of its own biggest moments of the year, and a good portion of it focuses on the happenings in Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Lower Decks.

While WhatCulture identifies Captain Janeway’s return to Star Trek as one of the top ten happenings (and I tend to agree), there were other moments on the list that could have easily been replaced by more important aspects of the series.

Star Trek had much bigger moments in 2021

Were the the 32nd century uniforms on Discovery and Brad Boimler’s showstopping image on Lower Decks in I, Excretus really as important as the announcement that Nyota Uhura, an original character from the very first Star Trek series, would be appearing in Strange New Worlds, played by Celia Rose Gooding? Or that Christina Chong would be portraying La’an Noonien-Singh, whose last name clearly indicates some type of connection to Khan Noonien-Singh, who was inarguably one of the best villains in the franchise? Or what about the appearance of the USS Janeway on Discovery?

WhatCulture did include the announcement of Q’s return to the franchise in Picard which was one of the highlights of the year. And it will be fun to see how much irritation John de Lancie’s character can bring to Admiral Picard. But the return of Q could have also included the time travel portion that will take place in the second season of the series as it increases the chance that we might see things more familiar to those of us who are avid fans of The Next Generation.

Choosing top ten moments is certainly personal preference, and while many will agree with all of WhatCulture’s list, there are others, like me, who would have liked to have seen those moments that made a bigger impact on the franchise overall.
