Mr. Spock comes to LA billboards to promote vaccines

Don’t be surprised if you’re driving down the road one day and happen to see a billboard of Leonard Nimoy in his best known role, Mr. Spock, from Star Trek: The Original Series. Right now, the logical Vulcan’s image can only be seen on billboards in Los Angeles as part of a campaign that has been in the works since last May, according to Geekwire. Organized by Nimoy’s family and L.A. Care Health Plan with the blessing of ViacomCBS, the billboard campaign is just getting started as there are plans to expand it, according to Julie Nimoy’s husband, David Knight.

"“New billboards in N.Y., Boston, Chicago, D.C., Seattle and Miami are already being discussed. In addition, we’re currently speaking with the World Health Organization about additional billboards specifically on vaccine equity in major cities across the world.”"

The Mr. Spock billboard is all about logic

The LA billboard shows an image of Mr. Spock sharing the well-known Vulcan salute along with the words “Save Humanity Get vaccinated! It’s the logical thing to do.”

Another billboard design highlights people wearing masks in the Star Trek colors and bears Spock’s “Live Long and Prosper” phrase along with the same “Get vaccinated! It’s the logical thing to do.” The billboard also has a picture of Leonard Nimoy.

In a press release issued by L.A. Health Care Plan, Julie Nimoy said the “live long and prosper” phrase was a message her father strongly believed in. And not just because of a long and healthy life. She went on to say that it represented peace, tolerance, diversity, and unity, and this campaign was a continuation of Nimoy’s mission to improve lung health.

Nimoy, who passed away in 2015, suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and his daughter and her husband run Remembering Leonard Nimoy, a website dedicated to bringing awareness and education to lung disease and prevention. This campaign promoting vaccinations is a part of that education.
