Shazad Latif is unsure of the future of Section 31.

When Star Trek: Discovery lept into the future to close out season two, several characters were left behind that many thought would be involved with the spinoff series Section 31. Michelle Yeoh, who was on Discovery, was pegged to be the main player in the series, and the rumor was that the show was being built around her. Yet, the show has yet to move forward and Yeoh has taken on many time-demanding projects.

Several other characters that fans suspected would be on the show were the prime Gabriel Lorca, still played by Jason Isaacs, Marcy Chieffo’s Klingon L’Rell, Shazad Latif’s Ash Tyler. None of them have been officially confirmed for the series, but Latif seems like a near-lock to appear.

That is should the show actually happen, as there have been some concerns about it ever happening at this point. After all, the pandemic has forced dozens, if not hundreds of shows and movies to get canceled just as they were to begin production.

Star Trek’s Section 31 remains in doubt even more so.

The show was announced several years ago and Yeoh, and the creators behind it, have seemingly moved on. Even Latif, whose character is directly involved with Section 31, has no idea what’s going on, telling the Pilot TV Podcast (via TrekMovie.com)

"Yeah, they were going to do a spin-off with Michelle Yeoh, and that is why {Latif’s character} takes charge of something else. And then, who knows what’s going on with that."

Latif even goes further on to say he has no idea what’s going on with the spin-off. Considering that Alex Kurtzman said the series is “very much alive” but when one of the supposed main players in the series has no clue about the show, that doesn’t bold well for its future.

Now some will point out that Kurtzman should be given more credit here than an actor, and that’s fair abut considering Latif was suspected to be a key player in the series, and how long it takes to set things up in advance, it would make sense for Latif to know if the series is heading towards filming so he can clear his schedule.

Sure, maybe he won’t even be used in the series, but that would be a lot of pointless world-building then. Why else bring him and Yeoh into the show for the intended purpose of spinning them off if you don’t intend on using him.
