The future of Star Trek: Discovery has been revealed.

For the longest time the future of Star Trek: Discovery was up in the air. Reports of the fourth season being shortened by two episodes during production started to pop up, with rumors of the series going way over budget for season four. Then it was reported that every active Star Trek show from Discovery, to Picard, to Lower Decks were all filming seasons back-to-back.

And all did, except for Discovery. The cancellation of a fifth-season production, immediately following season four, led many to wonder about the future of Discovery and rightfully show. ViacomCBS has a habit of announcing renewals for shows way early, which we’ll talk more about in a future post.

So it wasn’t out of the realm of possibility that ViacomCBS was planning on ending Discovery after season four, after all, the tea leaves pointed to such.

Yet, as they say in sports, that’s why you can’t settle for on-paper victories. You have to play the game.

Star Trek: Discovery’s fate revealed

For Star Trek: Discovery fans, you won’t have to wait any longer to find out the future of the series; as Discovery was officially picked up for a fifth season. With Paramount+ renewing the show so late, however, it remains to be clear how invested they are in the show long-term.

Season five could be extra short, and if it is, the future of the show could be very clear. It could also return to a longer production schedule with more episodes but on a tighter budget. That would be a sign that they figured out to do the show without stretching out the budget.

That said, we don’t know what the future of Discovery is beyond the fact that it’s getting a fifth season. Whether you like the show or not, it’s getting a fifth season and that’s not going to change.

So for fans of Discovery, rejoice, you’re getting at least one more trip with the crew.
