3 reasons Star Trek: Prodigy is a spiritual successor to Voyager

Kathryn Janeway and Chakotay return
While the show features characters like Dal, Rok-Tahk, and Murf as some of its main characters, that doesn’t mean the show isn’t steeped in classic Trek. Sure, we got that awesome episode that gave us holograms of Spock, Uhura, Odo, and others but the real connection to past Star Treks is one of its main characters, Kathryn Janeway.
Well, hologram Janeway. This Janeway, still voiced by Kate Mulgrew, is not the Voyager Janeway, instead, this is a hologram version of the iconic captain. She’s an Emergency Command Hologram and is serving as a tutor of sorts to the kids on the ship.
While she’s not the “real” Janeway, she’s still voiced by the real one (Mulgrew), so again, we’re counting it. Not only that but the series is actively exploring post-show history for Voyager. What happened to the crew of the Voyager once they returned? We have no idea, but thanks to the return of Robert Beltran as Chakotay, we’re going to find out.
The former first officer is back in Star Trek and has ties to the USS Protostar, the ship that Dal and his comrades are operating. We don’t know yet exactly what his ties to the ship are but we’re going to find out as the series progresses.
Exploring Voyager’s character’s story on Prodigy is just another reason that Prodigy is a spiritual successor of the former.
