Playmates reveal Wrath of Khan figures in the new Star Trek line of toys.

Monday saw the unveiling of some new action figures and other toys by classic Star Trek partner Playmates. News broke last year that the toy company was partnering back up with the Star Trek brand to re-create a new line of action figures that are inspired by the classic lines from the 1990s. While many people expected Star Trek: Prodigy to be front and center with this new line, it was actually classic figures that made the biggest impact; namely from Star Trek IIL The Wrath of Khan.

The first line will feature eight characters. Three from the Wrath of Khan, three from The Next Generation, and shockingly enough, two from Discovery.

The Wrath of Khan figures will include Khan Noonien Singh, James T. Kirk, and Spock. The Next Generation figures include Patrick Stewart, William Riker, and Data. The Discovery figures will be Saru and Michael Burnham.

The classic figures will be in “nostalgic” packaging, while the new figures will be in “new Universe” packaging.

The other pieces of the line include a classic phaser from the original series, as well as a toy model of the original USS Enterprise

Surprising choices but got the essence of the line correct

The original line of action figures from Playmates wasn’t the most versatile and a bit chunky, for lack of a better word, but that’s due to the era they were created in. Technology has improved, and so has production, so it’s not surprising these aren’t exact replicas of the original line.

These have smaller joints and look a little more slender. That’s not a bad thing at all. These figures look enough like the original line for them to be paired together. Classic fans should be happy with the look of the new line.

The choices are a bit surprising, as many thought that the line would start with Prodigy, but they may be waiting to wheel out a new line for that show closer to Christmas, only time will tell.
