Star Trek: Prodigy teaches the importance of friendship
Warning: This post contains spoilers for Star Trek: Prodigy episode “A Moral Star Pt. 1.”
Star Trek: Prodigy is close to wrapping up the first part of season 1 as it will air episode ten next week which is the second part of “A Moral Star.” This latest episode sees the crew handing over the Protostar to the Diviner in a trade-off that is supposed to save the miners on Tars Lamora. Of course, we all know the Diviner can’t be trusted. He’s made that clear since the very first episode.
In this episode, Gwyn, or “Progeny” as her father calls her, sacrifices her own freedom to join her father aboard the Protostar, but it’s part of the plan she and the crew had put together in an effort to save everyone on Tars Lamora because no one is believing a word the Diviner says. And Gwyn’s offer to go with her father shows just how far she has come since the beginning of the series back in October.
Star Trek: Prodigy is highlighting friendship and working together as a team
When Dal, Rok, Jankom, Zero, Murf, and Gwyn first came together aboard the Protostar, they were a group of misfits who knew nothing about working together, much less Starfleet. But through trial and error and a lot of help from Captain Janeway, they have grown together as a family and a crew. Not only have they chosen to follow Dal as their captain, together, they created a plan that will, hopefully, free all of the miners and recapture the Protostar.
If there is one thing that Prodigy is doing right, it’s teaching children how important a team is and how, through working together, more can be accomplished. The series has also shown the crew building friendships with aliens that are vastly different from one another. These juveniles are all from different planets, yet, their differences aren’t a point of conflict. These are powerful lessons children need to learn at a young age.
Prodigy has had its moments where I’ve questioned the themes it explores, but the writers know what they are doing when it comes to sharing important life lessons. Bravo to the entire team!
