Kate Mulgrew rises up on dragon’s wings as Flemeth

Both before and after Star Trek Legacy, Kate Mulgrew voiced characters in other science fiction and fantasy video games.

Most prominently, she has voiced Flemeth, the shapeshifting “Witch of the Wilds” in the Dragon Age series. An ancient and powerful sorcerer who can assume the form of a dragon, you can see and hear Mulgrew’s Flemeth in Dragon Age: Origins (2009), Dragon Age II (2011), and Dragon Age: Inquisition (2014).

In a 2009 interview with MTV’s Russ Frushtick, Mulgrew described her approach to the role:

"I’m not a gamer at all, and I think that’s why I’m a good voice for these games . . . . In order to become Flemeth I can’t really have any kind of stake in this game at all, except the stake of her reality."

I can’t help but wonder if Captain Janeway left as epic a trail of legend behind her in the Delta Quadrant as Flemeth seems to have done in the world of Dragon Age. Doubtless, she did!

Mulgrew has also loaned her voice to characters in these sci-fi and fantasy games:

  • Run Like Hell (2002) – Humans and aliens do gory battle invading monsters on a space station.
  • Lords of EverQuest (2003) – A Tolkien-esque epic conflict among the usual fantasy suspects (humans and halflings, dwarves and dragons, and the like).
  • Augmented Empire (2017) – A virtual reality, “cyberpunk tale of disparity and hope” in a mid-21st century, strictly socially stratified city.
