Star Trek: Prodigy could give the Janeway/Chakotay relationship a chance
Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Star Trek: Prodigy midseason finale “A Moral Star, Part 2.”
Captain Kathryn Janeway and Commander Chakotay spent seven years together on Star Trek: Voyager, and their intense chemistry had loads of fans wondering if the pair would ever enter into a romantic relationship. Of course, that didn’t happen, but that hasn’t stopped fans (or shippers) from wanting the couple to get a second chance. That might just happen with Star Trek: Prodigy since the midseason finale introduced Admiral Janeway to the series, and she happens to be looking for Chakotay.
In an interview with CinemaBlend, Kevin Hageman was asked about the couple and how fan expectations were being managed. Hageman said that the utmost care was being taken and that they were discussing the situation and relationship with Kate Mulgrew and Robert Beltran.
"Yeah, we’re constantly discussing that with her, with Robert, and it’s something that we take very seriously. And we want to make sure we do their relationship justice. And so, I think what fans will really enjoy in the next ten episodes is we’re taking this beautiful relationship from Voyager, and we’re taking it to the next chapter. You know, what happens after that. And we really go to some fantastic places with them."
Star Trek: Prodigy could handle a relationship with Janeway and Chakotay in a fitting manner
Seeing the CGI created characters of Janeway and Chakotay together won’t be the same as their real-life counterparts, but if there is one thing Kate Mulgrew has proven, it’s that she can embody an animated character with everything that Captain Janeway was. When watching Prodigy, it’s easy to expect the live-action character to come walking onto the bridge.
Undoubtedly, Robert Beltran won’t have any problems stepping back into the role of Chakotay, and his voice, like Mulgrew’s, will make that character come alive. So while there won’t be a “human” connection per se, there will definitely be a connection. And Star Trek: Prodigy handles relationships very well.
At the beginning of the series, it was easy to see the hate between Gwyn and Dal, and it was understandable, but over the ten episodes, the pair have become close friends, with Dal willing to risk his own life to rescue Gwyn from her father. Their transition from enemies to friends was handled beautifully. So I don’t think there should be any worries with Prodigy taking Chakotay and Janeway’s relationship to the next chapter.
