Warning: This post contains spoilers for the midseason finale of Star Trek: Prodigy
Seeing Admiral Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) in the most recent episode of Star Trek: Prodigy was a highlight for many Star Trek: Voyager fans. Though we’ve been seeing the training hologram of Janeway in the first ten episodes, it wasn’t comparable to knowing the real Janeway had returned. And this one was in charge of the USS Dauntless and on the hunt for her former First Officer, Commander Chakotay (Robert Beltran). But, according to Den of Geek, co-creator and showrunner, Dan Hageman, warns that this isn’t going to put the focus of the show on Janeway.
In fact, if you’re curious as to how much you might see Janeway in the second half of the first season which is coming up later this year, Hageman says you can compare her screen time to how much screen time the Diviner had in the first ten episodes. So, unfortunately, that’s not a lot of overall time we’ll be seeing the admiral, but she will still be a big part of the second half of the season.
Admiral Janeway will be hunting the Protostar on Star Trek: Prodigy
Co-creator and showrunner Kevin Hageman compares Admiral Janeway’s journey in tracking the Protostar to the movie, The Fugitive, that starred Harrison Ford.
“She’s going to be this wonderful force coming after the Protostar wanting answers. Who’s flying it? Where is Chakotay?”
Hageman went on to say that the juvenile crew of the Protostar was in way over their heads because the real Janeway is tracking them down. This isn’t the mentor they’ve come to know aboard the ship. This is an admiral who is determined to find the ship and her missing friend.
“The (Protostar) kids are in way over their heads. Now they’ve got the real Admiral Janeway coming. But she’s not gonna be the mentor. She’s gonna be after them, hunting them down.”
It’s going to take a lot for the crew to prove to Janeway that they’re not the enemy and that they don’t know where Chakotay is. On top of this, they’ll be on a dangerous collision course with Starfleet if Gwyn doesn’t recover her memories in time to warn them to stay away. If the Protostar does do damage to Starfleet, this crew is going to be enemy number one, and there will be no convincing Admiral Janeway that they aren’t as diabolical as the Diviner was.
