Star Trek 4 will feature the return of the JJ Abrams era cast.

We’ve known for months now that Star Trek will have a new film coming out soon, but we didn’t know any of the other details surrounding the new movie. The entirety of the cast of the last three films, (Star Trek 2009, Into Darkness and Beyond) have all voiced support of doing a fourth film. Many of the names at the top of the card, namely Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto have hemmed and hawed over a return for years, so a fourth film was always in doubt.

Then the death of Anton Yelchin happened, making a fourth film even more unlikely.

Well, we no longer have to sit and wait to find out news about the upcoming film. Variety (via TrekMovie.com) talked to JJ Abrams about the future of Star Trek films and it turns out that the cast from the last three films has all agreed to return to the franchise.

"We are thrilled to say that we are hard at work on a new ‘Star Trek’ film that will be shooting by the end of the year that will be featuring our original cast and some new characters that I think are going to be really fun and exciting and help take ‘Star Trek’ into areas that you’ve just never seen before. We’re thrilled about this film, we have a bunch of other stories that we’re talking about that we think will be really exciting, so can’t wait for you to see what we’re cooking up. But until then, live long and prosper."

Star Trek 4 could be interesting

The new film will feature new writers, in WandaVision director Matt Shakman, and the film will be written by Josh Friedman and Cameron Squires. The idea of exploring new areas we have never seen before brings up a list of possibilities like time travel or different universes.

If it does the multi-verse concept, fans will reject it. Both Marvel and DC have embraced that very same concept and frankly, it’s already overplayed and it only started. Hopefully, Star Trek doesn’t go that route.

I personally enjoyed the first two Abrams films but didn’t like Beyond. So I have some trepidation about this fourth film, though I am interested in it.
