Patrick Stewart talks romance storyline for Star Trek: Picard season 2

Star Trek: Picard’s Patrick Stewart is talking romance.

Many Star Trek: The Next Generation fans were hoping that an actual romance would take place between Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Dr. Beverly Crusher. Instead, there was a lot of flirting, some hints, and even a kiss or two, but that’s where the relationship ended, unless you count Captain Picard’s alternate timeline which took place in the series finale. In that universe, Picard and Crusher had already been married and divorced.

Since that didn’t actually happen, fans have been hopeful for a Dr. Crusher/Admiral Picard reunion in one of the seasons of Picard, and while Gates McFadden doesn’t rule out a return as the former doctor aboard the Enterprise, her appearance certainly isn’t looking likely in season two. What is looking likely, though, according to Stewart, is a romance of a different nature.

When asked by Comicbook about what new things his character is getting to do in the upcoming season, Stewart responded with a reference to a developed romance.

"“Well, what immediately comes to mind is romance of a very different nature and quality than it might have been in Star Trek: The Next Generation, when really, I had a succession of dates. But this has developed much more in season two.”"

Of course, that doesn’t tell us a whole lot, but it does sound like Picard will have a strong[er] romantic relationship than he’s ever had before. But the “very different nature” aspect of the actor’s comment leaves the doors wide open to possibility.

Now that he’s in a synth body, will he become involved with a synth? Is his relationship with Guinan about to go from friendship to more? Or is there another romantic partner on the horizon that we’ve never met? The riddle will be solved when Star Trek: Picard begins its second season on March 3rd.
