The next Star Trek movie is tentatively scheduled for a 2023 release.
As previously reported, the stars of the Star Trek (2009) movie series were surprised to discover a fourth film was going forward, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t excited now that they’re on board. Chris Pine spoke to Entertainment Tonight [via Trekmovie] about how excited he actually was to get back to work on the project.
Pine called the cast of the films a “tight family” that has been working together for fifteen years. He went on to say he thought everyone was ready to get back to work and were excited to see a script. When asked if he trusted the enough that he signed on without a script, Pine dodged the question by responding that he didn’t trust anybody, but he was excited, adding that he loved the story, Star Trek, and his people.
Star Trek is set to begin filming by the end of 2022
Even though a script is not yet in hand, J.J. Abrams confirmed to Digital Spy in February that the new movie would begin filming by the end of this year. He said they were hard at work on the new film that would feature the original cast and “some new characters that I think are going to be really fun and exciting and help take Star Trek into areas that you’ve just never seen before.”
As of now, no one really knows what the new film will be about as Quentin Tarantino’s and Noah Hawley’s ideas were shelved. Hawley’s was about a killer virus which probably didn’t thrill the studio considering we’ve been in the middle of a pandemic since 2020. Tarantino’s had a 1930s element with gangsters and time travel that I think would have been fun to see.
Last year, Kalinda Vasquez was tapped to write the new script, but nothing more related to her involvement has been mentioned. Then in July 2021, Deadline reported that Lindsay Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet were working on the script. So the good news is the movie is coming and the original cast is on board. The bad news is we don’t know anything more than that.
