Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premieres in May.

Even though Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is only a little over a month away, we haven’t gotten much by way of promo trailers. So the release of one today, that was shared by Universo Star Trek, is a bit of a surprise. It focuses mostly on Cadet Uhura and is, most likely, the clip that was shared with the press recently, or at least something similar to it. Presumably, as we draw closer to the actual premiere day on Paramount Plus, we’ll be given more glimpses of life aboard the Enterprise ten years before Captain James T. Kirk takes command.

One thing the trailer does make clear is that Cadet Uhura isn’t going to be restricted to the communications panel as Lt. Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) was on Star Trek: The Original Series. This teaser shows Uhura on an away mission, and though Nichols’ Uhura did that sometimes, it wasn’t very often, and very rarely did she have much to do on those mission…unless you want to count the second season episode, “The Gamesters of Triskelion.” Even then, there wasn’t much dialogue.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will hopefully bring other characters to the forefront.

This brief promo trailer offers scenes of Uhura talking with both Captain Pike and Mr. Spock.I don’t think Uhura had that much conversation with Captain Kirk the entire time The Original Series was on. At any rate, though, this can be taken as a positive sign that perhaps all the other characters will be given more dialogue and a chance to be both heard and seen aboard the Enterprise.

With Strange New Worlds bringing back legend characters like Dr. M’Benga, one can only hope that these characters serve a purpose rather than just show up onscreen for an occasional shot. They deserve more or, at the very least, as much as the original characters that are beaming aboard the Enterprise.
