More than one Star Trek show wanted Wesley Crusher to return
Wesley Crusher recently showed up on Star Trek: Picard
Wesley Crusher recently returned to Admiral Picard’s world, although he didn’t get the opportunity to interact with his former captain. Instead, he was there to help Kore Soong make a decision about her life after she’d discovered her “father” had lied to her. As it turns out, Star Trek: Picard wasn’t the only show that wanted to see the young genius return to the universe.
In a video released today via Paramount [via Trekmovie] entitled “Wesley Crusher’s return,” Alex Kurtzman and Akiva Goldsman discussed what had happened when the subject of bringing Wesley back to one of the currently airing Star Trek series came up. And things got a little heated, according to Goldsman who said “For the first time so far in the Star Trek Universe, people went to war over a character..” Kurtzman said that pretty much everybody wanted to bring Wesley to their own individual shows which caused a bit of a fight.
Akiva Goldsman called Wesley Crusher the “belle of the ball.”
According to both producers, there was back and forth between the series with each saying they wanted to bring Wesley back. But being a Star Trek: The Next Generation character, he had to return to Picard, which makes more sense than him randomly showing up on another series without a viable explanation.
Now that Wil Wheaton has made his appearance on Picard, which was executive producer Terry Matalas’ idea, and we know he won’t be returning for the series’ third season, the possibility he might show up on another series seems more likely with this new information. And Wheaton has already confirmed that he is open to reprising the character again. In the video, he shares that he was very excited about the scene that was written for his character in Picard.
"“I was so excited when I read the scene and saw the writers for Picard had taken the Wesley who’s existed in my head for all these decades and canonized him.”"
Now that Picard has brought Wesley back to the Star Trek universe and firmly established that he remains a Traveler, Wesley could go anywhere.
