Celia Rose had a lot of say in how her version of Uhura looked on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Uhura has had a lot of interesting looks over the last near 60-years of the character’s existence. Played previously by Nichelle Nichols and currently by Zoe Saldana in the film version of Star Trek, Uhura has always had a style all her own. Now, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds star Celia Rose is yet again bringing her own flair to the character.

Uhura has always had some pretty interesting looks over the years, embracing the hairstyles of the 60s, 70s, and 80s with Nichols playing the character, and Saldana going with a simpler ponytail, it looks like Rose has found her own unique look with her tight hair cut.

TrekMovie interviewed the young star and found out Rose had a lot of say in how Uhura is presented, not just with her hair but her wardrobe as well.

"Can you talk about the choice for Uhura to have your short hair? Did anyone try to suggest a wig or anything else? No. I auditioned like this and they loved it. So it was never a conversation. It was approached—like they asked me would I want to wear a wig? And my answer was, “Absolutely not.” Wigs? I like to let my scalp breathe. So to have an opportunity to look like myself and show up as myself as this character, it’s an incredible opportunity.Rebecca Romijn talked about how you two are given a choice of which uniforms to wear.Yeah, we choose. How does that work, choosing for each episode? It depends on what’s going on. I like to keep the ratio pretty balanced of top and pant versus tunic. And also sometimes if I’m just feeling the tunic, sometimes I don’t want to try and swim into that top and pants. So it really is however we’re feeling. And the costumes department, they are so forgiving. They’re so collaborative. And so they email us before every episode with like, “What are you feeling? What do you want to do?” And we take it from there."

Celia Rose may be doing things differently but she’s still doing it like Uhura

While it’s fair to say that Celia Rose is doing things her own way, that isn’t too far from what Uhura would be doing, isn’t it? Who’s to say she wouldn’t be rocking a tighter hairstyle early in her Starfleet career?

It tracks that she’d want to be seen on the level of others at her rank, and would hopefully want to make a good impression on her commanding officers, and sometimes not having to deal with things like hairstyles is just simpler.

You have fewer things to worry about in that regard, and you can focus more on being on time and doing your duty instead of worrying if you got your hair just right. Uhura has always been practical so a practical haircut makes sense.

Plus, who hasn’t changed their hairstyle dramatically at least once or twice in their life?
