Star Trek: Picard is getting a brand-new villain for its farewell season.

Earlier this year, Star Trek: Picard executive producer Terry Matalas told Trekmovie that season three of the series was bringing in a new villain which he called “quite possibly, one of the all-time great Star Trek villain performances we’ve seen to-date.” It shouldn’t come as a surprise that this little tidbit of information was just enough to have Trek fans asking questions. After all, you can’t just drop a crumb like that and expect us not to ask for more.

On May 19th, a fan did ask on Twitter if the villain was a character we’d seen before on Star Trek or if it was a new character. Matalas was quick to reply that this villain was a brand new character, but it would be portrayed by an actor we’d seen a million times before. It’s an individual that Matalas has always wanted to work with, and just like he teased for Gates McFadden’s return, he said we’re not ready for this villain.

A Star Trek: Picard villain whose never been a Star Trek villain before only makes us question more.

And fans did on Twitter, asking if the actor was Jeffrey Combs, a well-known face and name in the Star Trek universe. Matalas’ reponse was one word. “No.” [via Trekmovie] So another Trekkie pushed a bit more and asked if the actor had ever been in Star Trek before, and that’s when we learned that Picard was getting an all new villain played by a person new to Trek.

Not surprisingly, fans were excited at the prospect, and why not? In the past two seasons, Picard and his crew have faced the Romulans and Q, both very well-known to the Star Trek: Universe. Introducing a new villain in the final season is the perfect way to hype the series and have more Trekkies tuning in. After all, now that we know this is a new character, we have to know who it is.
