Star Trek: Picard gave us a new Borg Queen in the final two episodes of the series second season.

With the final two episodes of Star Trek: Picard revealing that Dr. Agnes Jurati (Alison Pill) was the new Borg Queen, having joined with Annie Wersching’s version in order to protect Agnes’ friends and the world, one resounding question was heard around the world from Trekkies. What happened to the original Borg Queen? How did Agnes’ assimilation affect the future Borg? Would it change anything about the villains that Starfleet would face in the future?

Okay, that’s more than one question, but understandably, folks were curious about whether or not Jurati was going to be the new Borg Queen. If that were to be the case, it would change history, including Admiral Picard’s interaction with the Queen while he was still captain of the Enterprise. Fortunately, Terry Matalas, the executive producer of Picard, cleared things up when he was pitched the question on Twitter. [via Trekmovie]

Star Trek: Picard didn’t change history with the introduction of the Borg Queen

According to Matalas, the Borg in 2024 were an “off-shoot from an alternate timeline and stayed out of history’s way.” He went on to specify that they weren’t “the Borg,” essentially from the future, adding that he imagined the real Borg “are probably licking their wounds still in the Delta Quadrant after Admiral Janeway poisoned them.”

The Borg from Picard are so different that, in an earlier draft of the script, they even had a different name given to them by Starfleet—“the Jurati.” Of course, we never got to hear that, which would have been kind of cool. But at least we know that the future hasn’t been changed, and the Borg will still get their come-uppance when they cross paths with Admiral Janeway in the series finale of Star Trek: Voyager.
