Kate Mulgrew discusses a possible Janeway return to live action
Kate Mulgrew currently provides the voice for the hologram Captain Janeway in Star Trek: Prodigy.
Kate Mulgrew portrays one of the most beloved Star Trek captains in the universe. Fans of Star Trek: Voyager were excited about her return, even though it was only in animation and as a hologram character in Star Trek: Prodigy. That changed at the end of the first part of season one of Prodigy when Admiral Janeway showed up. And now that the resurgence of Star Trek doesn’t seem to be going away, it’s natural for people to wonder if we’ll only ever see Captain/Admiral Janeway in animation. Will we ever have the chance to see her again in live-action?
That’s the question ComicBook presented to her when she was interviewed about her role in Showtime’s The Man Who Fell to Earth, though the question was originally phrased as a “would she make a surprise appearance in Picard’s final season,” which we know has already concluded.
Kate Mulgrew isn’t certain about what’s going to happen to Janeway in the future.
But there’s one thing she is certain of. That there’s been a “tremendous resurgence [in Star Trek] and “a rather vital one.” She went on to say that she was looking at it with new eyes and that she wonders what would happen if Janeway were to come back to live-action.
I can almost certainly tell her that fans would be thrilled with her return, provided it’s done properly and doesn’t set up her as a former admiral in her retirement years. We want to see her still serving aboard a ship, playing a vital role in Starfleet, and maintaining contact with her former crew. We want her to have a full life, one that doesn’t involve her doddering around wondering what to do with herself. Because that’s not Kathryn Janeway.
The Kathryn Janeway we remember is full of life and energy. She takes control and makes things happen. And fans love her. So if Kate Mulgrew ever returns to live-action, we hope it’s with the right writers who don’t change who she is.
