Season three of Star Trek: Picard returns with characters from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Fans haven’t seen the Star Trek: The Next Generation characters all together since Star Trek: Nemesis (2002), but Star Trek: Picard will fix all of that when it returns next season. The final season of the series includes most, if not all, of the cast members from The Next Generation, and executive producer Terry Matalas, when speaking with the Inglorious Treksperts Podcast, [via Trekmovie] said that each characters has “big things” to do, once again confirming that the actors aren’t returning for cameos.

And with all of these legacy characters coming back, not only on Picard, but Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Prodigy, and Star Trek: Lower Decks, it wasn’t a surprise that Matalas was asked about the possibility of characters returning from Star Trek: Enterprise, the series which ended abruptly in 2005 and was left without a proper finale.

The EP of Star Trek: Picard thinks there is a possibility we could see the Enterprise crew again.

Matalas probably surprised everyone when he was asked if the Enterprise characterrs could possibly return to the franchise, and he said “absolutely” before adding “even the dead one,” referencing Charles “Trip” Tucker, III, portrayed by Connor Trinneer. Trip was unceremoniously killed in the series finale of Enterprise, and his death isn’t something fans have gotten over. Although his death was retconned in the Enterprise novel, The Good That Men Do, written by Andy Mangels and Michael A. Martin, it’s not the same as seeing it unfold on the screen.

And should the Enterprise crew find their way back on screen, Matalas confirmed that he wouldn’t do an “Enterprise thing” without Trip.

"There’s no question you could bring those characters in. I think that’s the beauty of Star Trek. It’s science fiction. Spock can di [sic]and come back, it’s okay. If the story is good, and it’s good for the character, then that’s great. Certainly Trip, I wouldn’t want to do an Enterprise thing without Trip. You got to bring him back. I don’t know how, but you’d have to. I think all of the all of these things in Star Trek are viable options."

Of course, this doesn’t mean an Enterprise reboot is on the way, but it’s certainly possible for all of the cast to make an appearance on a current or new series much like The Next Generation characters will do in the final season of Picard. Though there are no guarantees, this certainly gives hope to the fans who would still like some type of closure.
