Star Trek: Picard is promising a major return to the franchise but who?

Star Trek: Picard is promising a major return to the franchise, at least according to showrunner Terry Matalas. Matalas didn’t say who but did specify that the person returning is someone that apparently eclipses the rest of the returns. At least for Matalas, that is.

As Matalas put it to the Inglorious Treksperts Podcast (via TrekMovie.com)

"And funny enough, there are moments that are–because there are some people who come back from Star Trek in this season that aren’t just the Next Gen cast. There’s one character who is in Next Gen who I was like, “I really want this character to come back.” And when they did, that was weirdly more thrilling than everything else in totality."

So who could it be? Well, we have three names that could return to Star Trek, which would make sense for a Jean-Luc Picard-themed series.

Three names we could see in Star Trek: Picard that we don’t expect.

Natasha Yar

The first that makes sense is Natasha Yar, played by Denise Crosby, who was killed off in earnest in season one. She returned for an “Elseworlds” type episode in season three, before Crosby was brought back once again as Sela. Sela is another name that could make their return to the franchise, though only time will tell on that one.

James Kirk

This one may not make all the sense in the world, and how they pull it off will make all the impact but Kirk and Picard have a history. The two crossed paths, ever so briefly, during the events of Star Trek Generations, and who’s to say that when Kirk died, he didn’t return to the Nexus? Star Trek is a wonky place, man, and anything can happen.

Benjamin Sisko

Considering Benjamin Sisko and Jean-Luc Picard didn’t part on the best of terms, with Sisko basically blaming Picard for the death of his first wife, this would make for a fascinating encounter.
