Star Trek: Lower Decks is getting an IDW comic mini-series.

Star Trek: Lower Decks will be the next Trek series to get a comic book. Released through publisher IDW, the home of Trek comics, this new mini-series looks to match the tone of the series. It will also release alongside IDW’s long-running Star Trek main-line series which is expected to launch its 400th issue later this year.

Star Trek: Lower Decks IDW series will be three issues long and will be written by Ryan North and illustrated by Chris Fenoglio. Fenoglio is also providing the variant cover for IDW’s Star Trek #400 issue one-shot as well. The Lower Decks mini-series is scheduled to be released in September,

Besides the original cover, the IDW mini-series for Strange New Worlds will also have three covers as well. Fenoglio is handling one, Jay Fosgitt is handling another and Philip Murphy is handling the retailer incentive cover.

The first issue’s synopsis is below;

"The hit Paramount+ animated series makes its comics debut with Eisner-winning comics writer Ryan North (The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl) at the helm! Soon after leading her crew on a planetary expedition aimed at building bridges and advancing Federation technology, Captain Freeman begins to suspect that the planet and its people are not all what they seem… Meanwhile, the crew in the lower decks take to the holodeck, enjoying some much-needed recreational time—until a bloodthirsty visitor decides to join in on their games."

IDW’s 400th issue features Star Trek actor and some amazing covers

The 400th issue is coming to store shelves too as well, and it’s going to be a one-shot comic. this means that the stories inside aren’t connected to anything previously or set up anything later. It’s a self-contained story and The Next Generation’s very own Wil Wheaton will be providing a story for the issue; one of several new stories for the issue.

"Celebrate IDW’s 400th issue of Star Trek comics with this monumental issue highlighting fan-favorite eras of the acclaimed series. This collection of minis brings together Star Trek comics veterans in an equal celebration of IDW’s Star Trek comics past and future. Join little Keyla Detmer—as seen in Star Trek: Discovery—Adventures in the 32nd Century #3—on a new expedition, visit the Kelvin Universe, witness a heartfelt tale by TNG’s very own Wil Wheaton, and more by Chris Eliopoulos, Declan Shalvey, Rich Handley, and Mike Johnson, with art by Luke Sparrow, Seth Damoose, Megan Levens, Angel Hernandez, and Joe Eisma!"

The big selling point for the book, however, is the covers. There are five different covers, one featuring a beautiful front-to-back cover of the more popular members of Trek’s history, another with more popular characters smushed together in the numbers “400” with five of the more prevalent ships in Star Trek’s history being seen overhead, a cover with all three men who played Spock throughout the franchise’s history, an odd one that features the Trek characters as child-like versions of themselves, and lastly one that features just about every prominent member of every series but in the style of the Lower Decks cartoon.

Star Trek #400 will also release in September, on the 7th.
