Star Trek announces new comic at SDCC featuring epic team-up
By Chad Porto
IDW is giving Star Trek fans a brand new team-up in their latest comic book.
San Deigo Comic-Con (aka SDCC) doesn’t have the same hype it once had, but it’s still a great place to find news on comics, sci-fi, merchandise, movies, and the like. Star Trek isn’t expected to have the biggest presence at the event but they’ve already gotten the week off and running with the announcement of a major comic book featuring icons of the Star Trek brand.
This new comic is featuring a crossover of epic proportions and is bringing back one character to the fold.
The IDW brand is re-numbering their mainline series and re-launching it with issue #1 and it will be set one year before the film Nemesis. It will feature Beverly Crusher, Data, and a returning Benjamin Sisko. It’s not really stated if this is now established canon or not, but for fans who miss Sisko, this is a huge chance to enjoy more of the Emissary.
The staff who worked on the Star Trek: Year Five series will be working on this book, with Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing doing the writing, while Ramon Rosansas handling the art. The new #1 Trek comic will hit the shelves in October.
Star Trek #1’s official synopsis (via TrekMovie.com)
"Star Trek #1 weaves an epic and unprecedented adventure story that spans the far reaches of the Star Trek multiverse, bringing together characters from across the galaxy—and all eras and variations of the beloved franchise—who must band together to prevent the mysterious murder of the gods. Its stardate 2378, and Benjamin Sisko has finally returned from the Bajoran Wormhole omnipotent. But his godhood is failing with every minute. Sent by the Prophets on a mission to the deepest parts of space aboard the U.S.S. Theseus, he witnesses the unthinkable: Someone is killing the gods. And only Sisko and his motley crew of Starfleet members from every era of Trek can stop them."
Star Trek’s new comic should hype fans
Not only is the comic series bringing back Sisko in a lead role, but will introduce two new characters alongside Crusher and Data. The first is a Vulcan named T’Lir and an Andorian child named Sato.
The designs for each new character are fantastic but the thing that really stands out is how well these Star Trek uniforms look on the current crop of characters they’re using in this book.
That isn’t all about this book, however. While the new characters and the artwork all look great, the selling point is that this book will feature names from across the Star Trek canon coming together.
It’s been done before, but the lineup will be the real selling point. For fans hoping to get a taste of the new Star Trek #1, the 400th super-sized issue will feature a sample of the upcoming book.
