The success of The Orville: New Horizons has put the focus on Seth MacFarlane for Star Trek’s future.

As I’ve mentioned before, this season of The Orville: New Horizons has been nothing short of amazing. Seth MacFarlane, the creator, director, and star, has taken this series into a new direction that every fan loves, and, in doing so, he has remained true to the characters as he created them in the first season. That’s something many fans feel that Alex Kurtzman, the executive producer behind the new Star Trek shows,  hasn’t done for Star Trek.

They don’t feel that Kurztman has the same understanding of Star Trek that MacFarlane, who is a lifelong fan, does. They point to the many changes that Kurtzman has made to the franchise and consider those changes his lack of understanding of it. One fan even went so far as to create a petition that asks CBS to put MacFarlane in charge of Star Trek.

Seth MacFarlane does have the creativity and knowledge to take over Star Trek.

But many fans love the new Star Trek series and don’t want Kurtzman to be replaced. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is one of the most popular Star Trek series, and it’s only in its first season. While Star Trek: Discovery has had its problems with fans, it is continuing into its fifth season, so it clearly has enough viewers to keep the renewals coming.

Those Star Trek fans who have loved the franchise from The Original Series and don’t like what is called Nu-Trek feel that their input is being ignored. That’s vastly different than the way MacFarlane pays attention to his viewers’ opinions as he recently changed a relationship based on what he’d seen from fans.

That said, will this petition make a difference in the way Kurtzman runs Star Trek? Will he be replaced by MacFarlane? That’s highly doubtful, and I’ll go so far as to say improbable. For the many that don’t like Nu-Trek, there are thousands upon thousands that do. And as long as the audience keeps tuning in, the shows will continue.
