Star Trek: Picard will return for its final season sometime in 2023.

Though 2023 sounds like it’s very far away, in reality, we’re only a litte over four months before the start of a new year which will, sadly, bring an end to Patrick Stewart’s run as Admiral Jean-Luc Picard…at least for now. Star Trek: Picard will end next year, but with the introduction of the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation, the series will be going out with a bang.

In recent interviews [via Trekmovie], Patrick Stewart and Gates McFadden added to fans’ anticipation when discussing the relationship between their two characters. Dr. Beverly Crusher and Captain (now Admiral) Picard had a slow-burning love story that didn’t really go anywhere. There were a few kisses and love confessions, but then there was the decision to not pursue the relationship. Now, however, the actors are hinting at what could have been a “behind-the-scenes” relationship which will affect their interactions when Picard returns for its final season.

Picard and Crusher’s discussions get personal on Star Trek: Picard

McFadden and Stewart had wonderful chemistry, and the pair acknowledge that chemistry still exists between them on Picard; however, the dynamic has changed. While McFadden admits her character is still just as argumentative as she was aboard the Enterprise, Stewart says those arguments are of a different nature than what they used to argue about…a personal nature, a family nature.

"Stewart: But the discussions are often of a personal nature, a family nature, which I can’t tell you about."

But Picard and Crusher weren’t family…that we saw on screen anyway. There’s been plenty of speculation about what went on with the pair after Star Trek: Nemesis. Obviously, something has to have happened for their arguments to be about family. Whether this means a romance happened between the two of them remains to be seen. One thing is for sure, though, this will be a very different reunion for the pair than what we were expecting.

What do you think? Did Dr. Crusher and Admiral Picard have a romance we didn’t see? Do you think the time for the two of them has past?
