Dr. Beverly Crusher didn’t have a large role in any of the Star Trek: The Next Generation movies.

In fact, Gates McFadden’s character, Dr. Beverly Crusher, was pushed to the background in most of those movies. And there were times during the run of Star Trek: The Next Generation that she was overlooked. Thankfully, when she joins the other cast members of her former series on the third season of Star Trek: Picard, she will have a key role, according to PIcard’s showrunner, Terry Matalas.

In an interview with TrekMovie’s All Access Star Trek podcast, Matalas said McFaddden’s character took a back seat in the Star Trek films. That’s clearly not going to happen the next time we see her as Matalas said the first person you see is Beverly Crusher in an unexpected way. Because twenty-five years have passed, she’s not the same person, and we already know there’s going to be some dissension between her and Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart).

An ending for Admiral Picard wouldn’t be complete with Dr. Beverly Crusher

Most of us will agree with Matalas’ assessment that Beverly was a giant portion of Picard’s life. They’ve been important in each others’ lives. So wrapping up Admiral Picard’s journey wouldn’t feel right without bringing back Beverly.

We’ve been told before that we aren’t ready for the doctor when she returns next year so obviously whatever Matalas has planned for her is something big. Add to that the hints Stewart inserted in a recent interview about the arguments he and Beverly will have over family issues, and we have a good idea that the scenes between the pair will be big-screen worthy.

It’s a relief to know that Dr. Crusher will at last get to shine in the spotlight even if it is for her final time as the character, though I hope this isn’t the case!
