Star Trek may be heading into the Kelvin timeline for their next show.

When we wrote about how to do the Star Trek: The Next Generation Kelvin series, we didn’t actually think anyone from Trek was reading our silly articles. Yet, here we are, with a brand new rumor that Trek is planning on doing a Kelvin television series for Paramount+.

While we don’t actually believe we influenced Paramount to launch this article, the rumor is very true, coming from Giant Freaking Robot. Is there any truth to the rumor? Who knows, maybe? It very easily could be a series in development and there’s a lot to the concept.

Right now the idea behind the series is that it’s going to be a time travel series, which would obviously give the crew writing the show a chance to explore all of the Star Trek lore without having to launch a dozen shows to do so.

The question really is going to be about whether or not fans will want to see Kelvin versions of all of  Star Trek’s biggest events.

This Star Trek Kelvin show could easily end up in development hell

I don’t know this for a fact, but I know it for a fact; if the fourth Star Trek film ends up being shelved for whatever reason, this show won’t be made. This fourth film is the last chance to really get that universe off the ground beyond the scope of Chris Pine’s James Kirk and the rest of the surviving cast members.

If they can’t get the fourth film going, then there will be little reason to invest money in a niche property like the Kelvin timeline series.

While most fans will show up to see original stories being told in a new universe, the idea of watching your favorite characters be changed for the sake of change won’t sit well with long-time fans of the series.

Fans want more Strange New Worlds, not more Discovery, and this show could end up being as polarizing as shows like Discovery if it isn’t handled right.
