Star Trek 4 needs just one director and that man is Jonathan Frakes.

Star Trek is struggling at the moment with its theatrical future. The fourth film in the Kelvin universe is severing major issues at the moment and its future is very much hanging in the balance. Noncommitals from some of the crew, to scripts not being finished and a project that has been so mismanaged the director they just hired also just quit.

The film needs to be stabilized, and it needs a brand new director at the same time. Some are suggesting that JJ Abrams come back to the project but his name isn’t exactly the most welcomed in the world of Star Trek at the moment and this movie needs all the goodwill it can muster.

After all, it’s attempting to move forward without a key cast member, Anton Yelchin, who passed away in 2016. Yelchin played Pavel Chekov, a key character in the Trek mythos, and without him, or his character, doing a fourth film seems incredibly complicated.

So what do you do to stabilize a chaotic film and bring in some goodwill for fans? You go back to the man who made, arguably, the greatest Star Trek film of all time; Jonathan Frakes.

Star Trek 4 needs Jonathan Frakes badly

Now, when we talk about Star Trek films, two film directors stand out above the rest; Jonathan Frakes and Nicholas Meyer. Meyer directed the Wrath of Khan, the second Star Trek film, and one of the best the franchise ever got.

Frakes directed First Contact, a film that equals Wrath of Khan in quality.

While Meyer has written three Star Trek films, all considered to be wonderful, Frakes is still active with the franchise to this day, making him more familiar with the product than Meyer, who hasn’t worked with Trek since the early 90s.

Bringing both men in, with Meyer handling the script and Frakes directing would be a wonderful tag team and hopefully, the folks at Paramount don’t bungle this.
