Star Trek: Prodigy will return from break with Kathryn Janeway hot on the Protostar’s trail.

Star Trek: Prodigy introduced audiences to a young crew of misfits from the Delta Quadrant, who are in possession of the USS Protostar. The Protostar is an experimental Starfleet ship once captained by Chakotay and is still a ship that Starfleet wants back.

Namely, Chakotay’s long-time friend and former comrade on the USS Voyager, Admiral Kathryn Janeway. Janeway has a beat on the Protostar and the end of the first half of the season saw the grizzled Starfleet officer hot in pursuit of the young crew, not knowing that it’s her own Emergency Command Hologram that is guiding the kids.

This will set up a huge encounter in the second half of the first season, and TrekCore wanted to find out what the plan is in showing the conflict with the real Janeway and the crew of the ship. They interviewed Prodigy star Brett Gray (Dal R’El), showrunners Kevin and Dan Hageman, and director Ben Hibon and asked them that very same question.

Gray took the reigns, however, and told them exactly how the two sides will interact.

"It’s really smart. What better way to set up conflict then to not allow the people who stole a Starfleet ship to speak to Starfleet! It’s a lot of show-and-tell, as opposed to talk-and-tell — so it’s going to be great to watch our crew really figure out how to navigate this world without being able to contact people, or even being able to know about what Admiral Janeway wants in general. It’s like playing darts, but blindfolded!"

Star Trek: Prodigy has a chance to court older viewers with its return

Star Trek: Prodigy is a unique show as it targets kids especially. It’s a show that all ages can enjoy and families are encouraged to watch it all together, but with the original Voyager-Era  Janeway returning, then older fans may be more inclined to watch.

She may be a bit older than her time on the Voyager, but she’s still the same Janeway fans followed for seven seasons.
