Is Star Trek: Discovery’s Saru about to get himself a girlfriend?

Star Trek: Discovery is a show that has a rough go of it. It took two seasons to get anything going, but the third season really delivered for most people. Then season four took things down a notch. The show is uneven and has had its budget slashed several times over the last few years.

The fifth season may very well be it’s last, but it’s always possible that the show gets a sixth and final go. This is largely due to the show not always getting things right. One of the things they did get right, however, is Saru, who has become the show’s most consistently popular character.

Saru is played famously by character actor Doug Jones, who has made many characters layered in prosthetics come to life. Jones’ affability and Saru’s unique look have made the pair a fantastic duo.

So much so that fans are eagerly waiting to see if Jones/Saru get a love interest in season five. Collider spoke to Jones about Saru and his potential romance with Vulcan President T’Rina and if fans can expect to see more out of that in season five;

"Change is always afoot, for the story and for the characters, individually, and Saru is included in that. My biggest concern, going into Season 5, was, “Will my romance with President T’Rina, my lovely Vulcan lady, still continue?” I was happy to hear the answer, but I’ll let you figure out what that is, when you see Season 5."

Saru deserves some nice, wholesome storylines

It may not be a big mystery or a “who done it” type storyline, but giving Saru a romance with another race, one very different than his own, is a wonderful thing. It may not be captaining starship but it is something that is often memorable.

After all, Jean-Luc Picard had Beverly Crusher, Will Riker had Deana Troi, Chief O’Brien had Keiko and Kathryn Janeway had coffee.

Sometimes a Star Trek romance is all you need to cement a character.
