This post contains spoilers for the Star Trek: Prodigy midseason premiere “Asylum.”

The first of ten new episodes of Star Trek: Prodigy returned to Paramount+ today, and even though there was a lot of belief suspension required (the teens jumping off the exploding Comm Relay and making it safely back to the Protostar), this was a well-crafted episode. The midseason premiere “Asylum” brought all of the team members back together, and they all finally found their way to Federation space where they located a Comm Relay Station.

Also joining this episode was the animated version of Captain Chakotay as we finally got to see Robert Beltran’s character make an appearance. He had a short scene with Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway in a holographic recreation before Janeway had to focus her attention on locating the Protostar. And it was that attention that brought the episode to a major cliffhanger that will play out throughout the remainer of the season.

Star Trek: Prodigy teased us with the end of The Diviner in the first part of season one.

But it’s John Noble’s The Diviner that the away team of the USS Dauntless, including Janeway, that they discover in suspended animation. Though we and the crew of the Protostar know the damage Gwen’s father can cause, Janeway has yet to meet him so she has no idea she’s about to awaken pure evil.

But, if anyone can handle The Diviner, it’s Janeway. She faced down the Hirogen, bested the Borg, and kept the crew of the Voyager, well most of them anyway, safe after being stranded in the Delta Quadrant. However mean and bad The Diviner is, Janeway has already seen it. So whatever he might have planned when he awakens, she’s not going to be so easily duped.

New episodes of Star Trek: Prodigy continue on Paramount+ on Thursdays.
