Chakotay and Janeway’s arc will continue in season two of Star Trek: Prodigy
Warning: This post contains minor spoilers for Star Trek: Prodigy “Asylum”
Captain Chakotay (Robert Beltran) returned in the midseason premiere of Star Trek: Prodigy. Through a holographic recreation, Admiral Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) reviewed the last time she’d spoken with Chakotay. He promised he’d call if he got into any trouble, and she wondered why he hadn’t called. Then her search continued for her lost friend and former second-in-command aboard Voyager. As it turns out, finding Chakotay will not be the end of the time these two will spend together.
According to CinemaBlend, Kevin and Dan Hageman, the creators of Prodigy, confirmed that Chakotay and Janeway’s story will not be resolved in season one of the series. Kevin Hageman was quick to add that they promised to deliver the goods with the two characters.
"And we promise that we will deliver the goods. We’re not just going to tease people and frustrate them. That would be terrible on our part to do, right? But I think we’re going to embrace what the next chapter is between these two characters. A lot of fans are divided on what they want to see happen with Janeway and Chakotay. I feel like we in the writers’ room really discussed it a lot. We discussed it with Kate and Robert, and I feel like we came to a wonderful place that we’re really excited to share. But know that it’s a Season 1 and 2 arc with those two."
Kate Mulgrew thinks fans will be happy with what happens between Chakotay and Janeway on Star Trek: Prodigy.
We’ve covered this before. Star Trek: Voyager fans wanted a romance between the captain of the ship and her second-in-command, but that never happened. Mulgrew even said it hadn’t happened in the time that had elapsed since Voyager ended. So could we see it in animation? Possibly, but this could cause an issue.
If Kate Mulgrew brings Admiral Janeway back to live action, and Prodigy has set up a relationship between Janeway and Chakotay, will it remain canon? Or will there be a convenient breakup before her series takes off? While Mulgrew thinks fans will be very pleased with what happens between this couple, that won’t be the case if it’s a relationship that doesn’t get continued should a Janeway series happen.
