Patrick Stewart has always seemed like a man who speaks his mind, and an award ceremony saw him really speaking out.

James Corden, the host of the Late Late Show with James Corden, has come under fire recently for expressing displeasure over an omelette cooked at New York City’s Balthazar restaurant. He was banned after allegedly being verbally abusive to the staff. After an apology to the owner of the restaurant, Keith McNally, the host was reinstated. However, Corden’s conversation with the London Times [paywall] has McNally saying he’s done with Corden altogether. Before this, there was another time when a celebrity called out Corden for what was perceived as inappropriate behaviour.

Patrick Stewart and Corden shared an awkward moment at the Glamour Awards several years ago. Stewart, sounding very much like Captain Picard, called Corden out for standing at the back of the stage with his hands in his pockets looking like he’d rather be anywhere but there. Corden immediately got defensive and told Stewart that he couldn’t be more wrong.

"“Oh you couldn’t be more wrong sir, you couldn’t be more wrong,. But when you come up and present an award, just f***ing get on with it.”"

Patrick Stewart then made a personal dig that brought James Corden into his personal space.

Stewart made a jibe about being able to see Corden’s belly from across the room, and Corden nearly crowded Stewart out from the microphone, demanding to know the punchline. While this might have been staged, one can never really tell. Stewart and Corden were having a quiet conversation afterwards, but this incident has been brought back to light via The News given the situation with Corden and the restaurant.

Stewart called it like he saw it, but whether he was out of line or not is up for debate. One thing is clear. The actor doesn’t hold his tongue when he sees something he considers to be wrong which is how we now have this clip that will forever stay on the internet. And a clearer image that the Admiral Jean-Luc Picard we see onscreen isn’t so far from Sir Patrick Stewart offscreen.
