Star Trek: Prodigy is nominated for a prestigious award.

Star Trek: Prodigy, only in its first season, has been nominated for a Children & Family Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Series. [via Trekmovie] This is the first ever Children & Family Emmy Awards as previously, animated shows and children’s programming were included in the Daytime Emmy Awards. Prodigy is competing against City of GhostsThe Cuphead Show!, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, and A Tale Dark & Grimm.

The last Star Trek series to be nominated and win such an honor was Star Trek: The Animated Series which won a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Entertainment Children’s Series in 1975. The Animated Series was nominated twice for the same award before claiming its first win, but it’s possible, with such high quality, Prodigy could win on its first time out.

Star Trek: Prodigy is worthy of such a nomination and an award.

While Prodigy has great effects and all the bells and whistles you could possibly imagine, it also has storytelling that goes beyond cute little tales for children. It digs deep and gets personal while teaching children along the way. Actually, it doesn’t just teach children. Adults can learn a thing or two from this series.

Brothers Kevin and Dan Hageman, who created the series, were thrilled with the nomination and shared their excitement on Twitter, which was met with a flurry of congratulations from excited fans.

Kate Mulgrew (Admiral Janeway and hologram Janeway), tweeted that she was absolutely thrilled. Then added, “Prodigy is extraordinary animation created and driven by a singularly gifted team, Kevin and Dan Hageman.” She summed up her congratulations with a promise for the future.  “Truly, we’ve only just begun.”

We won’t find out the results of the Children & Family Emmy Awards until after they are presented on Saturday, December 10 (Creative Arts) and Sunday, December 11 at the Wilshire EbellTheatre in Los Angeles.
