Fans furious over cancellation of London Destination Star Trek
The recent cancellation of Destination Star Trek in London has caused a furor among fans.
With plans to meet their favorite actors from the various Star Trek series, fans had spent hundreds, some even thousands, of dollars for the Destination Star Trek convention set to take place in London on September 30th. But the cancellation crushed their plans and left some of those Trekkies holding nothing but an apology from the event organizer.
According to Mirror, the UK promoter Showmaster, which is behind the organization of the event, has said ticket holders will be able to “enjoy a tribute to Star Trek” at the London Film and Comic Convention in July of 2023. But that wasn’t sufficient for fans who’d expended so much money and weren’t getting refunds.
Destination Star Trek may not return to London next year, either.
After waves and waves of complaints, Showmaster finally agree to offer refunds or vouchers to fans, but it shouldn’t have taken so much effort for their money to be refunded. As Jack Trestrail, the editor of Trek Central, said “if you pay for something and don’t get it, you want your money back.”
"“There’s a lot of anger directed at Destination Star Trek over this. If you pay for something and don’t get it, you want your money back, you don’t want vouchers for another event. Some people are rightly complaining they have spent all this money on hotels and flying in from the States and Europe and yet they can’t get a refund.”"
Showmasters issued an apology, adding that the cancellation was out of its control and that they’d tried desperately to find ways to make it work, but it was impossible.
Paramount, who had contracted with Shomasters to run the event, issued a statement saying “Given the unpredictable challenges of in-person events at this time, we wanted to focus all of our resources towards delivering one strong show for European fans.” That decision should have been made before thousands of fans spent their hard-earned money buying tickets and VIP sessions. And, likely, it will make fans hesitant to purchase tickets in the future.
