Chris Hemsworth confirms that Star Trek 4 has long been a struggle to make.

Nearly five years ago, Chris Hemsworth was in talks to reprise his role as George Kirk, the father of Chris Pine’s James T. Kirk. It would’ve been the backbone of Star Trek 4’s story but it never ended up happening. The film project was ultimately scrapped.

Why it was scrapped has always been a matter of debate. Many believed that it had to do with the budget of the project. Since the Kelvin Era Star Trek films were not exactly money makers, the thought of paying Pine and Hemsworth that much money may have been too rich for the studios to accept.

Yet, Hemsworth claims that it was a familiar situation that curbed the development of the film. According to Hemsworth on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the reason the film was never made then is the same reason the film now hasn’t been; there was no real script

"It wasn’t what I sort of where I was thinking it would have been or could have been. I thought there would be, ‘Okay, cool, let’s figure that out and keep going.’ And then I think everyone got busy and so on."

Even Chris Hemsworth believes that bringing him back wouldn’t make much sense.

Another issue that fans had with his “return” would’ve been the fact that Hemsworth is now pushing 15 years since he appeared as George Kirk, making it rather hard to explain the aging;

"It would be weird now to flash back to your father and “why is he so much older than the first time when he died?"

While he seems intent on doing the project should he be called, it seems that the best interest of the franchise and fans is to just let this project lie and find another way to bring Trek back to the big screens.
