In a first for the Star Trek franchise, Star Trek: Lower Decks has been nominated for a Critics Choice Award.

Created by Mike McMahan, the animated television series, Star Trek: Lower Decks debuted on CBS All Access (later rebranded as Paramount+) on August 6, 2020. The series has received positive reviews and accolades since its inception, including a Hugo Award nomination, a Saturn award nomination, and a Primetime Emmy Award nomination.

Now, the series enters into another arena with its recent nomination for a Critics Choice Award for Best Animated Series. [via Trekmovie] Its contenders are Bluey, Bob’s Burgers, Genndy Tartakovskey’s Primal, Harley Quinn, and Undone.

Star Trek: Lower Decks was previously nominated for a Critics Choice Super Award.

Last year, the series was nominated for Best Animated Series by the first-ever Critics Choice Super Awards which it lost to BoJack Horseman. But the animated series has racked up an impressive number of other nominations, with Dawnn Lewis winning a Women’s Image Network Award for Outstanding Actress Animated Program last year.

Critics Choice Awards has merged the Critics Choice Movie Awards and Critics Choice Television Awards, becoming Critics Choice Awards. The awards show will be broadcast live on The CW from the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles on Sunday, January 15, 2023.

Lower Decks wrapped its third season on October 27, 2022. It was renewed for a ten-episode fourth season in January, and in April, McMahan confirmed on Twitter that the writing for the season was currently underway. Look for it to premiere some time in 2023 on Paramount+.
