Did Patrick Stewart confirm a child for Picard and Dr. Crusher?
Patrick Stewart shared a hint about the third season of Star Trek: Picard.
While Star Trek: The Next Generation was in production, fans wanted a Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) romance. The chemistry was there. The history was there. And it just would have worked. Although the writers and producers teased some things, nothing really ever came to fruition…at least nothing we saw onscreen. But something may have happened offscreen if we are properly interpreting what Patrick Stewart had to say in a recent Den of Geek Magazine interview. [via Trekmovie]
Stewart admitted there were the makings of a romance between Picard and Crusher which didn’t seem like it was going to work out. Then he goes on to say that this season we learn that life-changing things happened for Picard and Crusher, and Picard is furious with the way Crusher handled an unexpected event.
"Well, there was a lot of personal tension that was always there. Jean-Luc always admired her, and she, him, in equal measure. But there have always been issues in the past where Picard thought maybe she wasn’t behaving appropriately. And, of course, there had been the makings of a romance, which didn’t seem that it was going to work out. But [this season], we learn that life-changing things have actually happened for Beverly Crusher and Jean-Luc Picard. His fury about the way in which Beverly has lived with this unexpected event led to some of the most interesting scenes that I played. The scenes I have with Gates in season three are among my favorites because they were emotionally naked, both of them…and vulnerable. I don’t think we’d ever seen both of them at the same time at that stage."
Could the unexpected event Patrick Stewart mentioned be a child?
This is as close to a confirmation as we could possibly hope for. Stewart tells us the romance didn’t seem like it was going to work out then immediately says we learn about life-changing things that have happened for Dr. Crusher and Picard. What is more life-changing than a child? And if Crusher decided to keep the knowledge of her pregnancy from Picard, it would certainly explain his fury during the third season of Star Trek: Picard.
If Picard and Crusher do have a child, who would now be an adult, how will this affect the relationship Picard was establishing with Laris at the end of season two? Perhaps, at the beginning of the new season, that romance is already over. However this plays out, this will certainly make for an interesting start to the final season.
