Why we need a Star Trek Christmas special

Every year at Christmas, Star Trek fans don’t really have a special episode or movie to watch.

This might not seem like much, but as fans, we’d love to have the holidays united with Star Trek. And with all the series we have on now, as a CinemaBlend writer recently suggested, there’s uncharted territory to explore. While the writer offers some pretty great ideas for potential Christmas stories, I’m sure we’d be happy with an episode that just has a Christmas party.

Even though Trek is set in the future, are we to assume Christmas is no longer celebrated? We haven’t seen much by the way of traditional holiday celebrations, either, so perhaps this is the case. But what would be the purpose of eliminating special times we celebrate with our families and friends?

Last year, Startrek.com pointed out that the franchise is secular and where the human characters acknowledge traditions of other cultures while honoring very few of their own. Yet, the writer goes on to point out that some of the Star Trek cast are extremely familiar with A Christmas Carol. The EMH even gave Seven of Nine a copy as requested reading so Christmas is well-known even in the future, but we don’t see anything about it.

A Star Trek Christmas can still be a secular holiday celebration.

More than religious people celebrate Christmas so maintaining a distance from religion and still honoring Earth traditions wouldn’t be out of place. And a holiday special on television is sure to draw in Star Trek fans, especially if it’s on regular television and not on streaming channels.

The Hallmark Channel has proven that Christmas movies are big business. Combine one of them with Star Trek, and it’s a recipe for success with Trek fans. Alternatively, a special that brings in the actors from the various series would be a welcome treat for fans as well. A simple holiday get-together where the actors share messages to the fans or their own holiday traditions would also be welcome, just something to honor one of the most popular and celebrated holidays of the year.
