This post contains spoilers for the season one finale of Star Trek: Prodigy.

The second part of the first season of Star Trek: Prodigy concluded this week with a lot of changes for the young crew of the Protostar. Those changes began last week in the first part of the season ender, Supernova, Part 1. As hard as they tried, the crew was unable to prevent Ascencia (voiced by Jameela Jamil), The Diviner (voiced by John Noble), and Drednok from boarding the Protostar. After a short battle with Gwyn (voiced by Ella Pernell), Ascencia (also known as The Vindicator) killed The Diviner as he tried to protect his daughter. Then Ascencia hailed the USS Dauntless which set the Living Construct into motion and departed the Protostar with Drednok, leaving her very much alive, which came as a surprise to some fans.

All along, The Diviner had been the villain, and he is the one who dies in the end instead of a Vau N’Akat of Solum we’d just met. But the second part of the season finale answered the “why” question for those who were asking.

Star Trek: Prodigy is opening new doors for season two.

While most of the Protostar crew will serve as officers under Vice Admiral Janeway’s (voiced by Kate Mulgrew) tutelage since they couldn’t get into Starfleet Academy right away, Gwyn decided to return home in the hopes that she can save her planet. A wormhole was opened because of the Protostar’s explosion which will, most likely, enable Gwyn to see her father again and could help her prevent Ascencia’s descent into darkness.

Stopping The Diviner from his dastardly plan wouldn’t be enough to prevent what happened in the future. Ascencia had her mind set on the destruction of Starfleet so it makes sense that stopping her, no matter what part of time she’s in, would be a top priority for Gwyn, too. So instead of just killing another villain, Prodigy allowed this one to live, potentially setting the scene for another battle or intervention.

Whatever the case may be, Prodigy handily established a plot line for season two by allowing Ascencia to live, Gwyn to return to her home planet, Janeway to discover that Chakotay (voiced by Robert Beltran) could still be alive, and the former crew of the Protostar to serve as full-fledged members of Starfleet. It’s going to be too long to wait for the second season!
