More hints that the crew might not be safe on Star Trek: Picard
Star Trek: Picard showrunner, Terry Matalas, has thrown another curveball with his latest interview.
Though Jonathan Frakes told Den of Geek recently that The Next Generation was “alive and well” at the end of the season, with the future ripe for continuation, showrunner Terry Matalas has countered that with his most recent interview with SFX Magazine. [via Trekmovie]
Matalas said he wasn’t going to say that all of the characters make it out safely, but he did offer the reminder that this is science fiction, and there are always ways of seeing people again.
"“I think there are ways of seeing these characters again, in a kind of Next, Next Generation story. Not all these characters—I’m not gonna say they all necessarily make it out safely of season 3. But I will say that in science fiction, there are always ways of seeing people again. So of course, who wouldn’t want to do this forever?”"
Terry Matalas has been hinting at the lack of safety for Star Trek: Picard characters for quite some time.
Even though Frakes said The Next Generation was alive and well, there could be some room for interpretation as he might have been referring to the series itself that could possibly make a comeback. Matalas himself referred to a kind of “Next, Next Generation” in the interview so perhaps we really are going to face the loss of a beloved character from The Next Generation. And none of us wants to even consider who that might be, but it sounds like it’s something we might have to do.
If there is an actor who doesn’t want to move forward with their character and definitively wants to close the door on a return, this would be the way to do it. So I would suggest we all brace ourselves for the upcoming season of Picard. And possibly have some tissues handy.
