Star Trek: Picard’s last season is being touted as “game-changing” for the franchise.

Star Trek:  Picard is coming to an end in a few short months. The last trailer for the event is coming on Sunday, Jan. 29, and then the show returns on Feb. 16. What happens after that is anyone’s guess, as this show has been mostly centered around the returning cast.

The return of the Next Generation crew has been the huge story around this show, and so the rumors of what’s going on around or during the events of the show have not been discussed or leaked. The hype has rightfully been focused on the legacy stars returning to the franchise.

All of the names are coming back, including Denise Crosby if the rumors are to be believed. But the return of the Next Generation characters to Picard isn’t the big moment that will define the series. Instead, showrunner Terry Matalas is hyping up an event within Picard that will have a dramatic effect on the franchise going forward.

Matalas spoke to SFX Magazine about the event and said;

"There is definitely a major event in the Star Trek universe. But not in a way that undoes it in any way. People hear game-changing like, oh god, we’re gonna undo some of Star Trek so it no longer feels like that. That’s certainly not what it is. But it will feel like an event in Star Trek history. For instance, in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, you know what I mean? That would be a moment in Star Trek history that everyone would remember. And that’s certainly true here."

Could Star Trek: Picard bring the Romulans into the Federation?

The alluding to Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country is significant, as it was a turning point in the Klingon and Federation hostilities. With Picard as a series revolving a lot around the Romulans over the last few seasons, it may stand to reason that Matalas may be suggesting that the Romulans’ dynamic with the Federation changes for good, and the long-time adversaries may finally be looking to make peace with the Alpha Quadrant.

Whether or not that happens is anyone’s guess but it may very possible.
