With the comments that some of the crew might not be safe on the third season of Star Trek: Picard, one has to wonder if the signs are pointing towards Admiral Jean-Luc Picard’s demise.

Much like any other fan of the admiral, I hate to think that the journey might end for Admiral Picard, but as horrid as the thought is, it would be understandable if Patrick Stewart decided to end his time as Admiral Picard. Stewart recently said that three seasons was all that were needed to tell what was left of Jean-Luc’s life. That sounds ominous in and of itself.

Though Stewart has said he is onboard for another Star Trek: The Next Generation movie, he is closing in on 83 this year, and a movie would take at least two years, if not longer to get underway and get filmed. Stewart has spoken before about how tired he had gotten during the filming of Star Trek: Picard. A movie would be even more tiring unless his role was limited.

If Admiral PIcard has a child on Star Trek: Picard, the torch could be handed to his offspring.

Showrunner Terry Matalas has talked about the passing of the torch in this final season, and Picard’s child, a younger version of the admiral with the same spirit and fire as Captain PIcard originally had in The Next Generation, would be the perfect fit to lead the charge…or at least be in the running to lead it, given the age.

I admit I’m speculating about Picard’s demise in the upcoming season. Maybe he and Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden) will find their happily ever after, and that will be the end of his story. But I can’t help thinking there’s going to be a major death in this final season. Why else would Matalas warn us that the crew isn’t safe? That usually signals that someone is going to die, and with most of the actors from the Next Generation just now returning to their respective roles, I can’t see one of them coming back only to get killed off.

We’ve seen Picard in his prime as the captain of the Enterprise. We’ve seen him in retirement. And we’ve seen him return to Starfleet. And if he does discover he’s a father, essentially, his arc will be complete. And while I certainly hope Picard will live to see another day at the end of the series, I can’t help doubting that he will.

What do you think? Will Picard be the character to die at the end of the series?
